History

黒竜 昌玖 Kokuryu “Onyx” Masashiku grew up in imperial occupied Doma alongside Hien. His father was a close friend and retainer to King Kaien, though was originally born in Hingashi. The Kokuryu family being one of the many renowned Samurai families over there. However their reputation was tarnished when his father fell in love with a powerful Noble’s favourite servant. Their lives ruined and with the Noble ensuring they wouldn’t have a comfortable future in Hingashi, they decided to sell most of their possessions and leave for Yanxia. Living out of a small house on the outskirts of Doma his father would offer his blade in service to Doma and King Kaien just before the Garlean Empire would invade.From a very young age Masashiku picked up an interest in martial arts. As he grew older became more and more fed up and wished to fight back against the occupation much like Hien. Not sure where else to start he begged his father to teach him swordsmanship. However, after being beaten and almost killed in his prime by Zenos in the first invasion his father had hung up his sword and fallen into a heavy depression. Though seeing his son show an interest in martial arts and wishing to learn from him helped to partially pull him out of his depression, he began training Masashiku. However his training would come to an end much sooner than expected, with the announcement of Emperor Solus’ death without an heir and the ensuing war for succession. The embers of rebellion would be sparked into raging flames and his father rallied to the cause. Despite being a teenager at the time and going against his father’s word, Masashiku too would join the cause and participate in a few battles. One of which he would leave with a memento in the form of a large scar across his left eye.While the rebellion would succeed in pushing the fractured Garleans out of Doma, the war of succession came to a swift end and Zenos soon returned with the XIIth Imperial Legion and swiftly crushed the rebellion. In the chaos of the Imperial’s retaliation attack, Masashiku’s father ushering him and his mother onto one of the boats leaving for Hingashi. His father would decide to remain and fight alongside King Kaien, unfortunately meeting his end alongside the King at the hands of Zenos.Not wanting to risk earning the Empire’s ire Hingashi would turn the large boat of refugees away. Next they sailed for Thavnair, where they would find the great gates of Radz-at-Han closed. Starving, they steeled themselves for a single last voyage west to Eorzea. Landing in Vesper Bay and appealing to Ul’dah for sanctuary, though they would end up being declined by a majority vote from the Syndicate. With the help of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn they would find a more permanent home in Revenant's Toll alongside the rest of the Doman refugees. While his mother began working for Rowena's House of Splendors, Masashiku would offer his budding swordsmanship skills to both the adventurers guild and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.Working for both gave him plenty of opportunities to explore Eorzea, and led to him chancing upon the swordsman Musosai in the Ul’dah Coliseum. Challenging any and everyone to fight him using a katana like he did. Naturally, Masashiku jumped at the chance and eagerly challenged the old man. While he managed to hold his own slightly better than the others who had never held a Katana before, he was still thoroughly schooled by Musosai. Regardless he had proved himself enough, the older samurai gifted him a Samurai job stone and agreed to begin training him.

Fate Grand Order

The Kokuryu family was a prominent samurai family that has existed since the Heian period. However the decline of the Samurai class in the late edo period affected the family severely. Some broke off and rebelled alongside the Satsuma and Choshu domains in the Boshin War, while the remainder attempted to become a family of Magi instead. Given the deep-seeded connection martial arts has with Spiritualism and Mysticism, such a shift was not unheard of. In fact many Kokuryu family samurai had previously developed basic skills in traditional japanese magecraft. While the family would ultimately succeed in this shift, it would mark the start of a slow but steady decline into obscurity. The family name carrying little to no weight in recent generations.Before he would be born Onyx's father would attempted countless times to breath life into the families reputation. Every attempt would unfortunately end in failure, and force him into significant debt with some of Japan's larger mage families. Forcing him to sell the family estate and many of their belongings. Still his father never relented, becoming obsessed with achieving some sort of breakthrough that could revive the family name. 黒竜 昌玖 Kokuryu "Onyx" Masashiku would eventually be born an only child on October 3rd, 1992 in Tokyo, Japan. Very early on in life he became interested in his fathers work, learning whatever he could whenever his father wasnt ignoring him or pushing him away. Unfortunately as he would come to learn this was because he was born with a below average number of Magic Circuits. Given the fact the Kokuryu family had not been a mage family long they were not of particularly high quality either, much to his father's disappointment.Distraught and discouraged Onyx would turn to martial arts instead, dedicating his time to kendo briefly while in school before eventually moving on to proper Kenjutsu. For a time it seemed as like he was on track to leave the world of magecraft behind. But that would change when the head of a Mage family his father owed money to would break into their apartment with some men, looking to collect on the debt he owed. Desperate and caught off guard, his father would try to fight them off but would ultimately fall to their superior magecraft. They would take most of his fathers things to pay off his debt and in a surprising act of mercy, decided to let Onyx and his mother live because they were clearly not nearly as involved with magecraft as his father was and thus would be no threat to them. Though of course the man made sure to discourage any thoughts to the contrary, his words sticking with Onyx to this day."The Kokuryu family was foolish for thinking they could just discard their swords for magecraft and retain even a modicum of the power and influence they once had. Your father was another in a long line of stubborn idiots who could't understand that they weren't meant for magecraft. Given how little he involved either of you in his delusions I'll be merciful and let you and your mother live. Hopefully you will move on from this and not make the same mistake he did... Cause while I'm not opposed to showing fools their place, I have much better things to do with my time. So for your sake, I hope this is the last time we see one another."That event paired with the personal discipline and spirituality he would pick up while studying martial arts would be the catalyst for him eventually reawakening his desire to study magecraft. With his limited aptitude for Magecraft Onyx would choose to focus on things that would supplement his martial arts abilities. Focusing on Resistance, Reinforcement, and Alteration mostly. Thanks to his martial arts training he also posses gives him a proficiency in “Breathing and Walking.” Not long after resuming his studies he would come across a recruitment flyer for the Chaldea Security Organization. Because of his budding skills and a discovered aptitude for spiritron dives he was selected to be one of the 48 Master Candidates.Leading up to Chaldea's first mission an argument with Director Olga Marie Animusphere over his desire to continue carrying his sword while working as a Master would see him pulled from the mission and sent back to his quarters. Which would ultimately save him from the subsequent bombing of the facility. When he felt the explosion he would rush back to the command room to try and find survivors, bumping into Dr Romani along the way. He would end up finding and trying to comfort a gravely wounded Mash while Romani went to activate the emergency power for the facility. Due to the explosion happening mid-procedure Onyx would end up being automatically registered as a Master and rayshifted into the first singularity.As a master Onyx can rarely be found without a sword at his waist, despite the mockery it often invites. And he is very adamant about fighting alongside his servants whenever he can. While he is obviously no match for the average servant, he is certainly capable of handling low to mid rank phantasmals and spirits. Much of his freetime is spent training or studying in order to get stronger.

Genshin Impact

Onyx fully immersed himself in the world of martial arts and swordsmanship from the moment he was first exposed to it. Any time that wasn’t spent training, was spent studying texts and manuscripts. Thanks to this and a bit of genetics, he was able to quickly pick up and master most if not all of the Kokuryu clan arts. Convinced there was nothing left he could learn from his clan, Onyx entered a local tournament. At barely 16 years old he held his own against adults almost twice his size until the semi-finals. However his next opponent would hand him a swift defeat before going on to win the tournament. This defeat frustrated Onyx, but only strengthened his resolve. Where before he may have settled for becoming just a great and or famous swordsman, now he he would only be satisfied with being the best swordsman in all of Teyvat.It was around this time he heard of Domon and his School of the Meikyou Shisui arts. Hearing that Domon was chasing the very same goal as him only made him doubly sure about becoming his disciple. So much so that he would spend less and less time at the clan estate and more at the School’s dojo. Roughly a year after becoming a student of Meikyou Shisui would he get a vision of his own, one of very few in Teyvat let alone the school itself. While he was very quiet about his goal to be the best, he would make up for that with his actions. Every waking moment spent training in some way. He had the honor of sparring with Sensei Domon once, and while he ultimately lost as all the other students had. Domon would note to him the potential he showed and that he even saw a bit of himself in Onyx.A few years later when the Vision hunt would begin. Fortunate circumstances would find Onyx out of the city when the Bakufu would eventually first come by the school to confiscate visions. The young swordsman would return to find Sensei Domon a shell of his former self after having his vision taken from him. The visionless students talked of possession, but he knew that wasn’t it. But his own clan’s close ties to the Tenryō commission and reverence for the Raiden Shogun left him conflicted. Knowing the last thing he had now was time to process his feelings, Onyx chose to return home to his clan that night to inform them before planning to leave for Watatsumi Island. Figuring he would be safer there as the locals worship the Watatsumi Omikami rather than the Shogun. However he would not get the chance.Knowing about his vision, his father was there waiting with a small contingent of commission samurai. Left with no choice Onyx was forced to fight and incapacitate the samurai before escaping out into the wilderness of Narukami Island. A few days of sneaking around the island and a few close calls would push him to smuggling himself out of the country on a boat leaving to Liyue. Unable to return without being caught almost instantly, he had little choice but to hone his skills and wait for the right opportunity to return. And that opportunity would present itself with the appearance of the traveler…

Vision

Growing up he had always been told of the powerful and mysterious spirits the Shogun and driven back into the forests. Curious and wishing to prove himself one night, a 17 year old Onyx took his sword and snuck out into the forest to see for himself. Instead of finding any spirits however he found a pair of outlaws camped out in the forest, and when they noticed him they were quick to draw their swords and attack lest he lead anyone back to them.Sure Onyx had spent the last six or seven years training, but he quickly came to realize that when it came to actual combat. Experience outweighs training, and these bandits had far more than he did. To him the fight felt like it lasted a hours but in reality it could not have been more than a few minutes at most. Onyx sustained a few injuries but gave just as good as he got. Good enough that the outlaws eventually decided that potentially dying there was looking more and more likely, and that outcome was one they would much rather avoid.Once Onyx had managed to make his way back out of the forest he was surprised when a single bolt of lightning struck the ground in front of him. Sitting within the small crater left behind was a electro vision.

Kokuryu Clan

The Kokuryu clan has been a part Inazuma’s Tenryō Commission for about as long as it has existed. A rather small clan when compared to others within Inazuma, but no less notable because of it. Filled with skilled warriors across generations the clan has slowly fostered its own style of swordsmanship. The style uses hundreds of techniques borrowed from a multitude of Inazuman Swordsmanship schools but places a heavy focus on iaijutsu techniques which is a counter-attack oriented art.Faithfully served both the Raiden Shogun and the people of Inazuma, with quite a few previous members of the clan have held significant positions across the Tenryō Comission and Bakufu itself. Onyx’s father and the current head of the Clan, Kageuchi was even once a General of the Bakufu. Though now in his late 60’s he has since retired to oversee the clan’s affairs and ensure Onyx is trained and prepared to lead the clan. Onyx however has been reluctant to take over the clan and instead shows a fervent interest in martial arts, ever since he first started learning the clan arts.
